Is your massage therapist's professional education and certification of concern to you? if in your opinion, all massage is good, pleasant, safe and of equal therapeutic value, the preparation required of a massage therapist doesn't matter. if it does, you should know that education and certification requirements vary widely from state to state and province to province.

The massage and bodywork profession is regulated by law in 38 states, the District of Columbia, and in four of the ten Canadian provinces. Regulation of those who advertise themselves as massage therapists is accomplished by licensure, certification, registration, or a combination of regulatory models.

Requirements for professional certification for a massage therapist vary by state and province. In most, a professional massage therapist earns their title through a combination of massage education and written and practical testing.

In October, 2007, the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards introduced the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx). To date, more than two thirds of the 38 states that regulate have adopted the exam. Industry watchers see this as a big step forward - a current, affordable and universal measure of therapist readiness.
