The massage and bodywork profession is regulated by law in 38 states, the District of Columbia, and in four of the ten Canadian provinces. Regulation of those who advertise themselves as massage therapists is accomplished by licensure, certification, registration, or a combination of regulatory models.

In most, a professional massage therapist earns their title through a combination of massage education and written and practical testing.
In October, 2007, the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards introduced the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx). To date, more than two thirds of the 38 states that regulate have adopted the exam. Industry watchers see this as a big step forward - a current, affordable and universal measure of therapist readiness.
